Here’s what happened
Joyner Lucas and Chris Brown have already worked together repeatedly - the pairing is established and the audience for it already exists.
Momma
is a tribute to both artists’ mothers, and the emotional register is nothing like their previous collaborations.
That gave us two separate assets to work with: a proven collaboration with a built-in fanbase, and a strong theme with reach beyond either artist’s audience.
The reading
FIG. 01
Phase one: fan content and the collaboration
We opened with content built around the pairing: live footage of the two performing together, music video edits, lyric videos, and fan-style edits. It performed strongly and established the sound.
FIG. 02
Phase two: the theme
We then pivoted a portion of the network to content built around mothers - footage of parents with their kids, edited to the record.
This produced a fundamentally different response. Theme content prompted reflection - people commenting about their own mothers, tagging them, sending the video on. The record stopped being a Joyner Lucas and Chris Brown song and became a vehicle for something much more emotional.
And the results?
The sound reached over 34,000 UGC creates.
Surge delivered 2,700+ videos at a $0.78 CPM - efficiency achieved on an independent release, without major-label distribution or marketing spend behind it.
